Stylish Baby Registry And Gift Ideas – Plus The Top 5 Must Have New Baby Items I Couldn’t Live Without
Last year I was pregnant with our first baby, and like any mom-to-be I was worried about the birth. Neigh, I was scared shitless about it! Sorry for the language, but I was. For the entire 9 months, I was so pre-occupied with worring about my sons birth that I completely lost sight of doing any sort of planning or shopping for him.
Fortunately I had a pack of amazing friends and family who banned together and took care of pretty much everything our baby was going to need for his first year and beyond. This is thanks to my friend Stephanie who ended up planning a baby shower for me – something I wasn’t prepared for on my own by any means! Shortly after I told her that I was expecting, she asked if I was going to have a baby shower, and at the time I hadn’t even considered it. Throwing a party for myself and asking everyone to give me presents while sniffing chocolate out of diapers? No thanks. But she insisted I should have one, and even offered to plan everything. An awesome friend indeed!
Babies? I’m Showered In Anxiety, TBH.
I’ll be totally honest, I wasn’t yet comfortable with the whole baby idea in the first place so planning the shower was a bit strange for me. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited and happy that my son was on the way, but the whole ‘babies’ thing still made me recoil with anxiety. I felt uncomfortable thinking about a room full of people playing baby themed games (as most baby showers are customed to have), so I told Stephanie that I did NOT want to play baby games or have anything be too ‘cutesy.’
“I want the shower to be more of a chill Summer bbq that also celebrated the baby, but like, not too babyish, ya know?”
I also stressed that the guests be co-ed, not just women, as I wanted my husband and all of our friends and family to come. Oh, and most importantly, there would have to be an open bar. Yes, you read that correctly. I made sure that my baby shower was a boozy one, even though I couldn’t drink, I wanted everyone else to! (Best decision, by the way, so fun). Stephanie cooked up the idea of a tiki themed BBQ at my building’s rooftop patio overlooking the city – which was perfect!
But then she had one more question… “What about the registry?”
The baby registery. Oh god. I thought. I really hadn’t a clue. What do babies need? What will I need? What is appropriate to ask for? I shrugged and said I didn’t have one, probably wasn’t going to make one. I didn’t even know how to make one!
She shook her head in dismay. Ok, I made that up, we were having this conversation on Facebook so I couldn’t see if she shook her head but I imagine that she did, and you probably are too because it seems like everyone knows how to make a baby registry. Amazon, duh!
Stephanie recommend that I create an Amazon Baby Registry. At the time I knew nothing about it, so here’s the rundown on what I know now:
- An Amazon baby registry is free
- You get extended 90 day returns
- You get extra discounts and benefits
- Amazon has everything a baby could need
- You can add items from any website to it
- Plus the registry is an easy and organized way for friends and family to shop for him/her/you!
- If you are an Amazon Prime member you get extra benifits, such as a free parenting ebook, free 2-day shipping, and additional price discounts on items. I wasn’t a prime member at the time, but now I wish I was! You can get a free trial of Amazon Prime here: Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial
As I was instructed, I headed over to the Amazon Baby Registry page and was relieved to discover how easy it was to set one up. I had no idea that you can add items to the registry from any website, not just Amazon! That was really cool. It actually ended up being fun to add items to it! Plus, I was surprised how stylish baby gear is nowadays. When I was growing up everything for babies was shiny plastic and brightly colored – not very chic! Nowadays baby furniture and items fit right in with modern home decor, and baby clothes are super trendy!
As I started to add items to my registry, I began to realize that I was coming around to this whole baby thing. Creating the registry gave me a bit of a distraction from being scared, and I was starting to enjoy and look forward to what was to come.
Even if you aren’t planning a baby shower, I recommend you go and start a registry, its a great way to keep track of items you want or will need for your little one over the years. If you aren’t expecting you can still set a registry up, and use it as a ‘dreamboard’ for things you’d like one day, or for ideas for gifts to give your expecting friends. The Top 5 Must Have New Baby Items I Couldn’t Live Without
There were a few items that ended up being incredibly useful and in my experience as a first time mom, completely necessary! Here are my top 5 must-have baby items, and then below that are my suggestions for a super stylish baby registry!
Out Of All The Items I Tried As A New Mom, What Baby Items Were The Most Necessary?
The safest way for your baby to sleep is on his/her back, swaddled in a sleep sack such as this one. Not only that, but in my experience my baby slept better and longer when wearing it, because the swaddle restricts the ‘startle reflex’ babies have that wakes them up. As my baby has grown I’ve continued to buy bigger ones – they are SO worth every penny.
The Halo Bassinest Swivel Sleeper was SO handy for those first few months. It can be placed right beside your bed, and the swivle feature makes it possible to easily get the baby in and out throughout the night for feedings. If you are recovering from a C-Section like I was, this product is a MUST, as picking up your baby from the Halo is easy on your stitches. Bending over to reach into a regular crib and can be super painful especially in the first few weeks after surgery. The Halo lights up and plays music and white noise too, which is very useful for getting your baby to sleep.
Known as “The World’s Favorite Teether,” the Sophie Teething Giraffe has a long history of helping teething babies. Born in France in 1961, derived from natural rubber and food paint, she is safe to chew. The Sophie website describes the toy’s shape is “easy for baby’s hands to grasp and she makes a delightful squeak when her tummy or head are squeezed.” I don’t know about the rest of the world’s babies but mine absoultely loves this toy, and will happily (and quietly!) chew on it when we in the car on long drives.
Spolier alert: Your kid is going to crap alot. And throw up alot. You will go through a TON of laundry. It’s wise to have a stack of several basic onesies on hand that you can easily change him/her in and out of. Save the fancy baby clothes for special occasions. Basic onesies are a baby registry must-have!
When my friend Stephanie was suggesting ideas for what I should add to my registry, the Diaper Genie was one of the first things she recommended. “What is a Diaper Genie? A glorified garbage can? Why can’t I just put the dirty diapers in the garbage can I already have?” That was what I was thinking back then. “Just trust me on this one.” She assured. So I added it to the registry, and when I was given it at my baby shower, I was pumped to try it out. I soon learned that this is no ordinary trash can, mama! It has a filter to illiminate the poop smell, and a seamless garbage bag system that makes cleaning up easy. Once you are looking after your newborn, you aren’t going to be able to or want to take the garbage out everyday, and this product makes it so you don’t have to. The diapers can sit in there and no one will notice or smell ’em!
